They’re owned by small fleet owners and local businesses. Each provider has been vetted by us before joining hiway to make sure they’re legit. We work closely with them to make sure that everyone using hiway gets the best service possible.

We offer three categories: Regular, Big, and Fancy. From there, we’ll assign you a car based on the category you picked.

Every hiway trip includes unlimited miles at no extra charge!

The car will have gas to get you going, but after that, it’s up to you to take care of refills. Make sure to bring it back with the same amount of gas you started with or else you’ll get billed the difference noted by the provider – and nobody wants that.

Yep, you cover any tolls you come across on your trip. If a toll shows up in your mailbox (like from one of those robot-eye toll gates that scans your license plate), we’ll bill you for it directly. If you don’t pay a toll on time, it’s up to you pay the additional fees.

If you do (unfortunately) get a ticket, as long as it’s not a moving violation (speeding, red light violation, etc.) or photo ticket, make sure to pay it in full immediately and notify the provider ASAP once you become aware of the violation.

You’re responsible for how you park. That means any parking tickets, tows, and fines received up to 24 hours after the end of the trip are on you.

If the ticket is for a moving violation and the provider gets it in the mail, hiway will provide the necessary info to the ticketing agency. Or we’ll give it to the provider, who may potentially contest the violation and transfer the liability to you.

Our car insurance works very similarly to a personal policy. Whenever you reserve a car through hiway and you meet our Eligibility Criteria, both you and the car owner are fully covered for the time span of the reservation by our insurance policy. This includes comprehensive, collision, and liability coverage a, up to $1M as outlined in our Terms of Service.

Like most insurance policies, a $1,000 (that’s one thousand dollars) deductible applies and will be charged to you for all physical damage and accident claims.

If you get into an accident during your reservation, please check and make sure no one is hurt – if anyone is hurt or you are unsure, notify the police first.

For the accident itself, file a claim with [email protected] no later than 24 hours after the incident for hiway’s insurance coverage to apply. Make sure you include the following information:

  1. Accurate description of the incident, including the location and cause of the accident.
  2. Names, phone numbers, and emails of all drivers, passengers, and witnesses at the scene.
  3. For all cars involved note their license plate number, make, model, year, color and all driver and insurance information.
  4. Pictures of the scene of the accident and any damage to vehicles.

We provide 24/7 access to a national roadside assistance dispatch service in the United States and Canada in case you run into any emergencies.

Depending on the nature of the call, you might be responsible for fees associated with the services provided (towing, locksmith, battery jump, etc.) during the event.

After you call for roadside assistance, you’re responsible for staying with the vehicle until everything’s been resolved or otherwise arranged with hiway. If the car can be safely driven after roadside assistance arrives, it’s up to you to get the car back to the meeting point.

For our deluxe category, users will need to pay a $1,000 deposit. In some other cases, users chosen by our security system pay a deposit of up to $250. The deposit amount is collected in full when the provider approves your request. If the deposit collection is unsuccessful, the request will not be processed.

If a security deposit is required, you’ll be notified by a hiway representative.

This deposit will be refunded 72 hours after you return the car in the condition that you received it. It will also be refunded if the trip is cancelled by you or the host. Depending on your bank and the means of payment, it may take up to seven business days after we release the deposit for the funds to be available in your account. If a claim is reported during your trip, or if an incidental charge fails or is disputed by you, the return of the deposit will be handled by a hiway representative and this may take longer.

In all cases, our security system automatically applies these deposits. They cannot be waived by hiway or by car owners.
